Volunteer Process Overview

Generally, Family Transition Place (FTP) volunteer needs include the following opportunities:

  • Administration/mailing
  • Childcare
  • Fundraising Committees
  • Board of Directors (see Board Recruitment section below)

Training and Benefits

Volunteers receive:

  • orientation to the agency;
  • information on woman abuse and its impact on children;
  • ongoing training and skills development;
  • current information about FTP events and activities;
  • a sense of satisfaction, contribution and purpose by participating in a social movement to end violence against women and their children.

Expectations

Volunteers are expected to:

  • review FTP’s Volunteer Handbook
  • complete an application, obtain a criminal reference check and sign a commitment to privacy form;
  • attend training;
  • commit to a minimum of one year.

Volunteers are responsible for understanding the parameters around safety and the importance of confidentiality. The ideal candidate will be able to adapt to an emotionally challenging environment, be a problem solver, and reliable. Potential volunteers must agree to Family Transition Place’s Volunteer Commitment to Privacy and Code of Conduct policies, and submit a relevant and valid police record check.

Consider joining the passionate, friendly and forward-thinking board of directors at FTP. We believe when a group of dedicated people with diverse skill sets work together in collaboration, sharing their hopes for a better future, one without violence, systemic racism, and hatred for the other, we CAN make a difference.

Previous experience working at the community level, on a board, or in a leadership position, while an asset, is not necessary. All applications are welcome. Persons who identify as marginalized are encouraged to reach out.

FTP’s Mission is to support the holistic wellbeing of those affected by gender-based violence and promote healthy relationships and community, through education. FTP primarily provides services to women and children who have experienced abuse. Other services include youth education, and counselling. Volunteering your time to participate on a non-profit board offers an important opportunity to have a long-lasting impact on your community. Through a process known almost universally as board governance, boards of directors are responsible for the overall well-being, and not the day-to-day operations, of the non-profit they support. In this way, governance refers to the oversight role a board of directors assumes, while the management of the organization itself, and any staff, is delegated to the executive director. This might mean, for example, that while the board of directors helps make decisions about funding allocations, or the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic planning, it is the executive director and their team who make staffing decisions, manage the payroll function, set the hours of work, are responsible for financial records keeping and who handle the myriad of daily tasks associated with the non-profits daily operations. Volunteering your time as a board member with FTP will not involve direct interaction with clients. For other type of volunteering, please scroll to the top of this page.
