September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day to honour survivors, their families and the thousands of children tragically killed in the residential school system. It is an opportunity to reflect on the painful history and enduring effects of residential schools in Canada and to commit to reconciliation.
If you would like to recognize the importance of this day, there are ways you can take time to do this locally. You can:
- Wear orange (share your support on social media)
- Join the Dufferin County Cultural Resource Circle at the Medicine Wheel from 6:00-6:30 p.m. on September 30th for a candlelight vigil
- Contact your local library for help in finding books about Canada’s history with residential schools – the Orangeville Public Library has already posted some helpful links on their Facebook page
- Look into free resources/courses/training to learn more about the history of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Here is a resource to start you off.
- Attend this event taking place in Shelburne on October 2, 2021, 2:00-4:40 p.m.
