Today (November 25) is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, as well as the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.
For the first time ever, a Wrapped in Courage flag-raising ceremony was held yesterday at Orangeville Town Hall. A proclamation in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was read by Mayor Sandy Brown on behalf of the Town of Orangeville and brief remarks were offered by FTP’s Executive Director, Norah Kennedy and MPP Sylvia Jones. The message was very clear: this community is not immune to gender-based violence and we need to work together to build awareness to end the cycle.
Flag-raising ceremonies like the one held here yesterday have been taking place all over Ontario throughout the month of November. This initiative was developed by Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses (OAITH) as part of their annual Wrapped in Courage campaign. Our flag will be up until December 10, 2021, which is International Human Rights Day. December 10th is also the final day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.
